Phytoremediation potential of twelve wild plant species for toxic elements in a contaminated soil

Vasileios Antoniadis et al.

Summary: This study assessed the phytoremediation potential of 12 native plant species in contaminated floodplain soils, with some showing significant absorption of Cd and Zn, indicating their potential for remediation. Herbaceous species were found to be more efficient in PTE uptake and biomass accumulation compared to grasses, potentially serving as key species in phytoremediation efforts.

Beyond cadmium accumulation: Distribution of other trace elements in soils and cacao beans in Ecuador

Fiorella Barraza et al.

Summary: This study examined the concentrations of 11 trace elements in cacao trees in Ecuador, finding that some elements in soils and cacao tissues exceeded the safe limits, but posed low risk to human health. Further research is needed to understand the distribution patterns and interactions of these elements within cacao trees.

Wheat and maize-derived water-washed and unwashed biochar improved the nutrients phytoavailability and the grain and straw yield of rice and wheat: A field trial for sustainable management of paddy soils

Punhoon Khan Korai et al.

Summary: The study found that adding biochar, especially wheat raw biochar, significantly increased rice yield and the availability and content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in plants. Additionally, the availability and content of iron, manganese, zinc, and copper in rice and wheat grains and straw also significantly increased. However, the water-washing process altered the properties of biochar, particularly the water-extractable carbon, decreasing its efficiency.

Atmospheric wet deposition of trace elements to forest ecosystem of the Qilian Mountains, northwest China

Fei Zang et al.

Summary: The study investigated atmospheric trace element (TE) deposition in remote forests of the Qilian Mountains. Results showed that copper (Cu) was the most abundant TE in wet deposition, with higher concentrations in Qinghai spruce forest compared to Qilian juniper forest. Factors influencing atmospheric TE deposition included rainfall amount, intensity, duration, humidity, and wind speed. Three major sources of particulate matter were identified as industrial activities and waste incineration, traffic emissions and coal combustion, and biomass burning. Long-range transport of TEs significantly impacts remote forest ecosystems in the Qilian Mountains.

Heavy metal contamination and its ecological risks in the beach sediments along the Atlantic Ocean (Limbe coastal fringes, Cameroon)

Armel Zacharie Ekoa Bessa et al.

Summary: Beach sediments collected along Atlantic Ocean of Cameroon were geochemically analysed using ICP-MS techniques to determine their contamination of heavy metal and related ecological risks. Results showed moderate contamination of the study sediments by metal, with risks ranging from low to moderate.
