The occurrence and distribution of strontium in US groundwater

MaryLynn Musgrove

Summary: Groundwater samples from 32 principal aquifers across the United States reveal the widespread presence of strontium, with detectable concentrations in 99.8% of samples and 2.3% exceeding health-based screening levels. The factors influencing strontium concentration vary spatially and are partly dependent on the type of groundwater well. Elevated strontium concentrations are commonly found in carbonate aquifers due to water-rock interaction with strontium-bearing rocks and minerals.
