Glucosinolates in Brassica Vegetables: Characterization and Factors That Influence Distribution, Content, and Intake

Xianli Wu et al.

Summary: GSLs are sulfur-containing compounds found in the Brassica genus; Brassica vegetables are among the most commonly consumed vegetables in the world. Evidence suggests an inverse association between the consumption of Brassica vegetables and the risk of various types of cancer; the biological activities of Brassica vegetables are largely attributed to the hydrolytic products of GSLs.

A Single Seed Protein Extraction Protocol for Characterizing Brassica Seed Storage Proteins

Mahmudur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study focused on isolating and measuring proteins in rapeseed oil-extracted expeller cake to maximize protein yield while minimizing hazardous chemical use and extraction costs. By testing various extraction methods, a standardized Single Rapeseed Seed Protein Extraction (SRPE) procedure was developed, providing an efficient and economical way to extract seed storage proteins. The optimized method was validated by applying it to different Brassica oilseeds and an ethyl methane sulfonate mutant population, demonstrating its usefulness in identifying and characterizing seed storage proteins.

Ethylene and Sulfur Coordinately Modulate the Antioxidant System and ABA Accumulation in Mustard Plants under Salt Stress

Mehar Fatma et al.

Summary: The combined treatment of ethephon and sulfur improved the antioxidant system and reduced oxidative stress under salt stress, enhancing chloroplast development and photosynthetic performance. It also decreased ABA accumulation in guard cells, leading to increased stomatal conductance. Ethylene and sulfur play a role in regulating stomatal conductance and photosynthetic efficiency under salt stress.

Effects of nickel on morpho-physiological parameters and oxidative status in Brassica napus cultivars under different sulphur levels

Gintare Sujetoviene et al.

Summary: Increased trace metal levels, particularly Ni, can negatively affect plant growth, but optimal sulfur nutrition can help mitigate the effects and reduce Ni accumulation in plants.

Applicability of SCoT markers for detection of variations in Fusarium yellows resistant lines of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) induced through gamma irradiations

Vishal Sharma et al.

Summary: In this study, Fusarium yellows tolerant/resistant lines of ginger were generated through in vitro mutation induction using gamma irradiations and selection on culture filtrate, followed by molecular evaluation using SCoT markers. Genetic variations among different lines were analyzed, showing differences between lines selected under different selection pressures. The results suggest the applicability of SCoT markers for evaluating Fusarium resistance in different ginger genotypes in the future.

Catalase (CAT) Gene Family in Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.): Genome-Wide Analysis, Identification, and Expression Pattern in Response to Multiple Hormones and Abiotic Stress Conditions

Ali Raza et al.

Summary: In this study, the CAT gene family in the rapeseed genome was comprehensively analyzed, identifying 14 BnCAT genes classified into four groups with distinct gene structures, conserved motifs, and responsive elements. Expression analysis revealed that several BnCAT genes showed significant upregulation in different tissues and under various stress conditions, providing valuable insights for future investigations on the CAT family genes in rapeseed.

Soil Sulfur Sources Differentially Enhance Cadmium Tolerance in Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)

Iqbal R. Mir et al.

Summary: The study found that sulfur application to soil can alleviate the negative impact of cadmium on plants by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity and reducing glutathione content, thereby strengthening the defense mechanism against cadmium.

THE GENETIC VARIATION ASSESSMENT OF IN VITRO IRRADIATED TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) BY SCoT AND ISSR MARKERS

Ayman El-Fiki et al.

Summary: Mutation induction in tomato plantlets through tissue culture and gamma radiation was studied, and the genetic variation was analyzed using SCoT and ISSR markers. The results showed that increasing gamma radiation doses led to decreased survival rate and growth of the plantlets, with SCoT marker being more accurate and efficient than ISSR marker for distinguishing and analyzing genetic variation in irradiated tomato plantlets.
