Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Thyroid Disrupting Effects of Old and New Generation PFAS

Francesca Coperchini et al.

Summary: PFAS are synthetic compounds widely used in industry due to their properties, but are potentially dangerous for human health and the environment. New generation PFAS have replaced some old generation PFAS in order to be safer. Concerns exist about the adverse effects of PFAS on the thyroid gland and human health.

In vitro human cell-based TTR-TRβ CALUX assay indicates thyroid hormone transport disruption of short-chain, medium-chain, and long-chain chlorinated paraffins

Jannik Sprengel et al.

Summary: Short-chain chlorinated paraffins, medium-chain chlorinated paraffins, and long-chain chlorinated paraffins have been shown to have effects on the thyroid hormone system. Testing revealed that longer chains and higher degrees of chlorination in chlorinated paraffins may have higher activities and lower toxic thresholds.

Assessing Indoor Dust Interference with Human Nuclear Hormone Receptors in Cell -Based Luciferase Reporter Assays

Anna S. Young et al.

Summary: The study found that all indoor dust samples exhibited hormonal activities, which were associated with PFAS, PBDE, and OPE levels, posing potential risks to human health.

Role of hydrogenated moiety in redox treatability of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid in chrome mist suppressant solution

Yixiang Bao et al.

Summary: The study showed that 6:2 FTS can be rapidly degraded under the UV/PS system, but the presence of hydrogenated moieties significantly slowed down the degradation rate under the UV/SF system. Most decomposed fluorinated compounds were converted to fluoride in both systems.

High levels of fluoroalkyl substances and potential disruption of thyroid hormones in three gull species from South Western France

M. Sebastiano et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence of PFAS in three seabird species in South Western France, finding that the birds were exposed to levels comparable to highly contaminated species from other geographical areas. PFAS were negatively associated with the body condition of two studied species, with results being sex-dependent. For the great black-backed gull, a positive association was found between exposure to PFAS and TT3, suggesting a potential disrupting mechanism of PFAS exposure.
