Synergistic effect of microbubble flow and light fields on a bionic tree- like photobioreactor

Luhaibo Zhao et al.

Summary: A bionic fractal tree-like photobioreactor with multiscale bubbles was studied to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer and microalgal photosynthesis. Numerical simulations and experiments focused on characteristics of microbubbles and large bubbles in the reactor, finding that the good flow characteristic of microbubbles tended to generate a homogeneous dispersed flow pattern. Combining the tree-like PBR with microbubbles enhanced photosynthetic capacity and microalgal activity, providing a novel technical solution for improving multiphase photoreaction.

Summary: Cyanobacteria have been proven to have great potential as whole-cell biocatalysts, thanks to their photoautotrophic metabolism. Their ability to use light and CO2 as energy and carbon sources respectively promises sustainable production. To fully exploit the potential of cyanobacteria, their cells must be considered as a whole to maximize their biocatalytic capabilities.

Investigation of growth limitation by CO2 mass transfer and inorganic carbon source for the microalga Chlorella vulgaris in a dedicated photobioreactor

B. Le Gouic et al.

Summary: This study validated the accuracy of a well-controlled photobioreactor experiment setup and investigated the transfer and assimilation of CO2 in water by photosynthetic microorganisms. The gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient (k(L)a) was modeled to understand the dissolution of CO2 in water, affected by the composition of the culture medium and its pH value. Additionally, the carbon assimilation and growth limitation by the carbon source were studied for the microalga Chlorella vulgaris.

Recycling industrial wastewater for improved carbohydrate-rich biomass production in a semi-continuous photobioreactor: Effect of hydraulic retention time

Ma. Isabel Sanchez-Contreras et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of a mixed microalgae culture to remove nutrients and organic matter from industrial effluents while producing carbohydrate-rich biomass. Different hydraulic retention times (HRT) resulted in varying inorganic carbon profiles, N:P ratios, and microbial changes in the culture, affecting nutrient removal efficiencies and carbohydrate content. The optimal HRT for achieving high biomass production and COD removal efficiency was found to be 8 days, with a consistent carbohydrate content of 57% without additional carbon source.
