Production, characterisation, utilisation, and beneficial soil application of steel slag: A review

James O. ' Connor et al.

Summary: Slags are co-products of the steel manufacturing industry, primarily used for soil amendment and beneficial utilisation in agricultural soils, but pose potential environmental and health risks. Further research is needed to assess the long-term effects of slag in agricultural soils on animal and human health.

Effects of crude oil contamination on geotechnical properties of sand-kaolinite mixtures

Mahmood Ahmadi et al.

Summary: The study found that crude oil contamination significantly affected the engineering properties of sand-kaolinite mixtures, including the maximum dry density, optimum water content, permeability, and pH values. Different ratios of clay/sand also had a significant impact on water holding capacity and soil shear strength parameters in the presence of crude oil. Additionally, Scanning Electron Microscope images showed that crude oil contamination caused aggregation of clay particles and a flocculated structure with more macropores.

Use of steel slag as sustainable construction materials: A review of accelerated carbonation treatment

Qifeng Song et al.

Summary: Steel slag is a by-product of the steelmaking process characterized by abundant free calcium/magnesium oxide and high heavy metal content. Recent research has shown that accelerated carbonation can improve the properties of steel slag. The challenge lies in understanding the interconnectedness between influencing factors and their contributions to the improvement of steel slag properties.
