Essential structure of S-N curve: Prediction of fatigue life and fatigue limit of defective materials and nature of scatter

Yukitaka Murakami et al.

Summary: This paper elucidates the essential structure of the S-N curve based on fatigue life and material limit prediction methods containing defects, and discusses the extended application of this method to step loading and variable amplitude loading. The applicability of Miner's rule is also discussed from the perspective of continuous decrease in fatigue limit with number of stress cycles and crack growth.

Fatigue limit of Ni-based superalloy 718 relative to the shear-mode crack-growth threshold: A quantitative evaluation considering the influence of crack-opening and -closing stresses

Yuya Tanaka et al.

Summary: The fatigue strength of Ni-based superalloy 718 was investigated relative to shear-mode crack-growth thresholds, with precipitation-hardening found to have a negligible impact. It was determined that crack-opening/-closing stresses only imperceptibly alter shear-mode resistance. Based on these findings, a novel strategy for quantifying the alloy's fatigue strength was proposed.
