Effect of crosslinked structure on the chemical degradation of EPDM rubber in an acidic environment

Qingkun Liu et al.

Summary: The degradation of peroxide-cured EPDM and sulfur-cured EPDM in an acid solution was investigated, and it was found that the degradation mechanisms were different. Peroxide-cured EPDM experienced main chain breakage and formed ether-crosslinked structures, while sulfur-cured EPDM underwent internal crosslinking reactions leading to a crosslinked network dominated by polysulfide bonds, increasing crosslinking density. Additionally, the presence of coagent TAIC in the peroxide curing system delayed degradation time and improved stability.
