Effects of benzyl viologen on increasing NADH availability, acetate assimilation, and butyric acid production by Clostridium tyrobutyricum

Hongxin Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, benzyl viologen (BV) was utilized to enhance butyric acid production by Clostridium tyrobutyricum from glucose, while eliminating acetic acid accumulation. The addition of BV increased butyric acid yield and productivity, inhibited acetate production, and promoted glucose and acetate co-utilization for butyric acid production. Manipulating metabolic flux and redox balance through BV and acetate addition provided a simple approach for efficient butyric acid production.

A cathodic electro-fermentation system for enhancing butyric acid production from rice straw with a mixed culture

Yafei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the cathodic electro-fermentation (CEF) system had a positive effect on butyric acid production compared to the microbial fuel cell (MFC) system. The addition of neutral red (NR) did not enhance butyric acid production, and the CEF system had a higher production and specific yield of butyric acid than the open circuit (OC) system.

Energy-efficient butanol production by Clostridium acetobutylicum with histidine kinase knockouts to improve strain tolerance and process robustness

Guangqing Du et al.

Summary: This study identified four orphan histidine kinases (HKs) that control sporulation and solventogenesis in Clostridium acetobutylicum. Single knockout of cac3319 halted sporulation at the initiation stage but increased butanol tolerance and production, while cac0437 knockout caused premature sporulation and inhibited the transition to solventogenesis, resulting in low butanol production.
