Integration of solid oxide fuel cell and internal combustion engine for maritime applications

Harsh Sapra et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel integration approach of SOFC-ICE for maritime applications, which allows for high-efficiency power generation by blending SOFC anode-off gas with natural gas in a marine spark-ignited engine. The study found that the SOFC-ICE integration can significantly improve efficiency, emissions, load sharing, space and weight considerations, and load response, with the potential for promising improvements in efficiency and emissions reductions.

Fuel cell-battery hybrid systems for mobility and off-grid applications: A review

Shuai Ma et al.

Summary: The global demand for fossil fuels in the transportation sector is increasing rapidly due to the continuous growth of internal combustion engine vehicles, leading to severe environmental problems. Therefore, increasing the use of renewable energy sources in the transportation sector is necessary. Battery and fuel cells are promising alternatives due to high efficiency and low emissions, but are limited by capacity and dynamic response issues.
