Competitive adsorption between CO2 and CH4 in tight sandstone and its influence on CO2-injection enhanced gas recovery (EGR)

Jingchen Ding et al.

Summary: The experimental study investigated the competitive adsorption characteristics of CO2-CH4 in tight sandstone, showing that CO2 has a higher adsorption capacity and can displace CH4 in tight cores. The sensitivity experiments demonstrated that competitive adsorption is more significant in tight cores with lower permeability, higher rock fragment content, and lower water saturation. Additionally, for water saturated cores, the dissolution of CO2 in water has a greater impact on EGR and CO2 storage efficiency.

Carbon dioxide adsorption and interaction with formation fluids of Jordanian unconventional reservoirs

H. Samara et al.

Summary: The study shows that utilizing carbon dioxide in shales can enhance oil recovery and climate storage, but success depends on controlling various mechanisms in rock pores. Results indicate that operating pressure significantly affects interfacial properties, and gas adsorption on rock surfaces is directly related to contact angle of the gas.

A review of common practices in gravimetric and volumetric adsorption kinetic experiments

Jin-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The availability of commercial gravimetric and volumetric systems for measuring adsorption equilibrium has led to an increased use of these instruments for measuring adsorption kinetics. However, a review of publications from the past 20 years identified worrying trends, such as lack of information on experimental conditions and use of inappropriate models for data analysis. In order to provide guidance, this study discusses appropriate models for diffusion in porous materials and common practices in recent publications, concluding with recommendations to avoid misinterpretation of experiments.

CO2 enhanced gas recovery and sequestration in depleted gas reservoirs: A review

Ahmed Hamza et al.

Summary: Depleted gas reservoirs are considered safe and reliable storage sites for sequestering CO2, with the potential for cost reduction through incremental recovery of residual natural gas after CO2 injection. Research on CO2 adsorption/desorption characteristics in depleted gas reservoirs and applications in unconventional resources contribute to advancing CO2-EGR technology knowledge. Additionally, assessing ecological and economic impacts of storing CO2 in different reservoir types is important for understanding the overall effectiveness of CO2-EGR operations.

Impact of clays on CO2 adsorption and enhanced gas recovery in sandstone reservoirs

Ahmed Hamza et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide enhanced gas recovery (EGR) is a promising technique to sequester CO2 and boost natural gas recovery. The impact of clays on CO2 adsorption in sandstone rocks was evaluated, showing that clay type, amount, and distribution influence CO2 uptake. The study highlighted the potential of CO2-EGR for clay-rich sandstone reservoirs and the role of clays distribution in core flooding experiments.

Enhanced Sorption of Supercritical CO2 and CH4 in the Hydrated Interlayer Pores of Smectite

Junyoung Hwang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sorption properties of four source clay minerals for water and the adsorption of CO2 and CH4 on different clay minerals in the presence of water. The results show that physisorption analysis by N2 and Ar gases is not suitable for quantifying the textural properties of clays, and water does not compete with gas adsorption on certain clay minerals.

Driving Mechanisms in CO2-Assisted Oil Recovery from Organic-Rich Shales

Hanin Samara et al.

Summary: Shale is considered a potential hydrocarbon resource, while the utilization of CO2 in enhanced oil recovery is gaining global attention. This study investigated the effects of CO2 injection on wettability alteration and volumetric expansion in a system comprising organic-rich shale, water, and model oil. The results show that CO2 pressure has a direct impact on surface water wetting and volumetric expansion, with divalent ions promoting reduced water wetness at elevated pressures.
