Coalescence inhibition and agglomeration initiation near the critical dilution of asphaltene precipitation

Evgeniya (Jenny) Hristova et al.

Summary: The study shows that agglomeration can occur below critical dilution by surface asphaltene precipitation at the water-oil interface, without bulk asphaltene precipitation. This finding highlights opportunities to improve not only bitumen froth treatment but also other oil-water-solids separation processes further.

Bitumen froth treatment in the transition region between paraffinic and naphthenic process conditions

Evgeniya (Jenny) Hristova et al.

Summary: Bitumen froth treatment is a crucial step in recovering bitumen from oil sands through surface mining, separating water and mineral solids from the organic bitumen product using hydrocarbon solvents. By conducting the treatment in a transition region, the advantages of commercial processes can be combined while drawbacks are eliminated, resulting in improved hydrocarbon recovery and product quality.

Primary submicron particles from early stage asphaltene precipitation revealed in situ by total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy in a model oil system

Jia Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the early stage of asphaltene precipitation in a model oil system in response to diffusive solvent addition, providing direct visualization of the size distribution and structural characteristics of asphaltene precipitates. The correlation between the size and number of asphaltene particles and the concentration of paraffinic solvent in the diluent is found to be significant for association with water and solids and separation properties.

Separation of SAGD produced emulsions through a combined pre-dewatering and demulsification process

Guanli Shu et al.

Summary: The study introduced a combined pre-dewatering and demulsification process to investigate the effectiveness of different demulsifiers in separating oil-water emulsions, showing that polyamine block polyether reverse demulsifiers can promptly migrate to the oil-water interface in the pre-treatment stage to promote coalescence and separation of water droplets. The subsequent demulsification process with high-temperature resistant demulsifiers efficiently separated water-in-oil emulsions, and the synergistic effect of the combined chemicals expedited oil and water separation.
