Experiments and numerical simulation on the suppression of explosion of propane/air mixture by water mist

Keisuke Nakahara et al.

Summary: Experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the impact of water mist on the minimum ignition energy and flammability limits of C3H8-air mixtures. Results showed that water mist can increase the minimum ignition energy density, but its suppression effectiveness depends on the equivalence ratio and mass fraction of water mist. The smaller the diameter of the water mist, the greater the suppression potential.

The explosion enhancement of methane-air mixtures by ethylene in a confined chamber

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: The study experimentally investigated the explosion of methane-ethylene-air mixtures and found that ethylene can increase the maximum explosion pressure and laminar burning velocity while shortening the combustion time. Different combustion regimes were identified under different equivalence ratios, which can help prevent potential fire and explosion accidents.

Flammability limit and explosion energy of methane in enclosed pipeline under multi-phase conditions

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: The experiment results showed that there is a volume effect on the flammability limit of gas, with the flammability limit for pure methane in an elongated pipeline of 76 dm(3) volume being 9%-17%. The increase of the flammability limit range under gas-liquid coexistence condition increases the risk of gas explosion.

A numerical simulation of the suppression of hydrogen jet fires on hydrogen fuel cell ships using a fine water mist

Yupeng Yuan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the reliability of fine water mist for suppressing fires on hydrogen fuel cell ships using Fire Dynamics Simulator software. It found that fine water mist is not effective in extinguishing hydrogen jet fires, but can effectively reduce fire field temperature and prevent fire spread with appropriate parameters. Increases in droplet size degraded suppression effect, while higher spray velocity enhanced it to a certain extent. Ambient wind speed was identified as an important factor influencing the suppression effect of fine water mist on hydrogen jet fires.

Summary: The study conducted 20 sets of full-scale water mist fire suppression experiments to examine the impacts of water mist system on smoke temperature characteristics. Results showed that optimal temperature control could be achieved when t = 3 min, P = 12 MPa, and K = 0.5. Longitudinal ventilation was found to improve visibility at platform and reduce smoke temperature, especially when coupled with a working pressure of 12 MPa.

Summary: Water mist is an important substitute for halon fire extinguishing agents due to its clean and environmentally friendly characteristics. This study evaluates the suppression performance of N-2 twin fluid water mist with KQ compound additive on ethanol pool fire, demonstrating improved fire extinguishing efficiency and reduced flame intensification. The compound additive not only enhances the physical and chemical fire extinguishing effects, but also reduces corrosion from chemical additives, ultimately enhancing the reliability of water mist fire extinguishing technology.

A novel reactive P-containing composite with an ordered porous structure for suppressing nano-Al dust explosions

Haipeng Jiang et al.

Summary: The novel chemical suppressant PA@NH2-MCM41 was successfully synthesized and proved to effectively suppress nano-Al dust explosions. Experimental results showed a significant reduction in flame propagation velocity and maximum explosion pressure with the addition of low proportions of the suppressant, with complete suppression achieved at higher concentrations. The formation of a sealing film by PA@NH2-MCM41 on the surface of explosion products was observed to interrupt aluminum evaporation and surface reactions.
