Current density distribution in air-breathing microfluidic fuel cells with an array of graphite rod anodes

Bowen Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the current density distribution in air-breathing microfluidic fuel cells with an array of graphite rod anodes under different acidic and alkaline conditions. Results show that the performance of the cell is better under alkaline media compared to acidic media, with various current density distributions observed. In acidic media, two-layer anodes far from the cathode exhibit higher current densities at lower current densities, while the reverse occurs at higher current densities. In contrast, under alkaline conditions, the two-layer anodes far from the cathode are consistently the main contributor to the total current density.

Dual-electrolyte aluminum/air microfluidic fuel cell with electrolyte-recirculation

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The Aluminum/air microfluidic fuel cell combines the advantages of co-laminar MFC and aluminum/air batteries, making it a promising device for powering numerous nodes in the Internet of Things ecosystems with high energy density, low cost, membraneless, and miniaturized design. The recirculating dual-electrolyte design in the cell exhibits outstanding performance with an open-circuit voltage of 2.2 V and a short-current density of 1 A cm(-2), benefiting from the regular hierarchical porous carbon paper separator that minimizes electrolyte mixing and facilitates recirculation. This work provides an alternative route for cost-effective and high-performance aluminum/air MFCs towards real applications.
