A method to estimate battery SOH indicators based on vehicle operating data only

L. Vichard et al.

Summary: Batteries are complex systems that are affected by variable ambient operating conditions, and understanding their dynamic behavior and degradation laws under actual conditions is essential for durability improvement. This study proposes a method to model batteries based on experimental data from postal vehicles, which shows promising results in estimating state of health indicators linked to internal resistance and available capacity. The proposed model aims to provide accurate state of charge estimation onboard and contribute to a better understanding of battery degradation laws.

Combined State of Charge and State of Energy Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery Using Dual Forgetting Factor-Based Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter for Electric Vehicle Applications

Prashant Shrivastava et al.

Summary: A new dual forgetting factor-based adaptive extended Kalman filter (DFFAEKF) is proposed for State of Charge (SOC) estimation, combined with a simple State of Energy (SOE) estimation approach to develop a combined SOC and SOE estimation method. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately estimate battery states under dynamic operating conditions and converge quickly to true values under erroneous initial conditions. It also has a complexity order equivalent to DEKF and helps reduce the computational burden on processors in BMSs for EV applications.

Investigation of capacity fade for 18650-type lithium-ion batteries cycled in different state of charge (SoC) ranges

Jiangong Zhu et al.

Summary: By cycling 18650-type cells with cathode blend LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 and LiNi0.9Co0.05Al0.05O2 and graphite anode in various SoC ranges, differing capacity fade was observed, with cycling in a medium SoC range showing lower capacity loss. Lithiated cathode loss and loss of lithium inventory (LLI) were found to be the dominating degradation factors, with SEI growth considered as one of the main fatigue reasons behind the LLI. Ohmic resistance (R-0) and SEI resistance (R-1) were found to have a linear relationship with the change in battery capacity.
