Techno-Economic Optimization of CSP Plants with Free-Falling Particle Receivers

Luis F. Gonzalez-Portillo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of a CSP system with a free-falling particle receiver, aiming to reduce the LCOE to $0.05/kWh. Through upgrades in the model and validation against CFD simulations, the results show that the LCOE can be reduced to $0.056/kWh with optimized component sizes.

Analysis of optical properties in particle curtains

Luis F. Gonzalez-Portillo et al.

Summary: The optical properties of particle curtains were investigated using a Monte Carlo Ray-Tracing (MCRT) model, which found that the absorptance of curtains with sand and CARBO particles can be very high in opaque curtains. Additionally, an analytical model was developed for a simpler prediction of the optical properties of particle curtains.

Thermal performance analysis of free-falling solar particle receiver and heat transfer modelling of multiple particles

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed two-dimensional transient numerical simulation of the solar particle receiver, integrating Monte Carlo Ray Tracing and the Finite Element Method to gain a clear understanding of heat transfer process. Results show that the transient heat transfer process inside single particles has a slight impact on the average outlet temperature and solar thermal energy conversion efficiency of the receiver, with better performance observed when solid particles with a diameter of 0.2 to 0.4 mm are used in the experiment.

Dense upflow fluidized bed (DUFB) solar receivers of high aspect ratio: Different fluidization modes through inserting bubble rupture promoters

Yimin Deng et al.

Summary: A fluidized bed using Geldart-A particles is suggested for heat transfer in solar towers. Experimental results show that the presence of bubble rupture promoters can improve the fluidization structure, reduce slugging, and enhance heat transfer efficiency.
