Decommissioning vs. repowering of offshore wind farms-a techno-economic assessment

A. M. Jadali et al.

Summary: Offshore wind turbines are designed with a nominal service life of 20 to 25 years; the decision on selecting the most appropriate end-of-life scenario, such as decommissioning, repowering, or service life extension, depends on criteria, techno-economic, and risk assessment. This paper compares repowering and decommissioning through a techno-economic model, showing that full repowering reduces LCoE by nearly 35% compared to partial decommissioning and 36.5% compared to full decommissioning in a hypothetical offshore wind farm scenario.

An economic assessment framework for decommissioning of offshore wind farms using a cost breakdown structure

Tosin Adedipe et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop an economic assessment framework for decommissioning offshore wind farms using a cost breakdown structure (CBS) approach. The study identifies cost elements and their key influencing factors, aggregates similar activities into four cost groups, and proposes mathematical models to estimate costs and identify critical cost drivers. Results show that removing wind turbines and foundation structures is the most costly and time-consuming stage of the decommissioning process.

Uncertainty and global sensitivity analysis of levelized cost of energy in wind power generation

Mi Dong et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical framework for uncertainty in the cost of wind power generation, improving cost prediction accuracy by considering inflation and the learning curve. The study finds that the scale parameter has the most significant impact on the levelized cost of energy, and a 38% margin is needed to ensure a 95% reliability for changes caused by uncertainty factors.

Summary: The study found that the future reduction in wind energy density has a significant impact on the net present value of wind farms, but little influence on the levelized cost of energy. By considering the variation of wind resources due to climate change, a more accurate assessment of the economic viability of offshore wind farms can be made.

Economic analysis for implantation of an offshore wind farm in the Brazilian coast

Max Mauro Lozer dos Reis et al.

Summary: The onshore wind energy sector in Brazil has experienced rapid growth in recent years, reaching a 9% share in the country's energy matrix. While offshore wind installation is currently non-existent in Brazil, research has shown significant untapped energy potential. This study aims to conduct an economic analysis for offshore wind projects in Brazilian waters using CAPEX and LCOE indicators, identifying economically and energetically favorable regions. Results suggest that the Northeast region of Brazil, particularly between Maranhao and Rio Grande do Norte states, offers lower Levelized Cost of Energy and Capital Expenditure. Other potential but less promising areas for offshore wind farm deployment include regions between Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo states, as well as between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states.

Collector System Topology Design for Offshore Wind Farm's Repowering and Expansion

Tengjun Zuo et al.

Summary: This paper explores the repowering and expansion of offshore wind farms (OWF) and presents the potential benefits of combining these parts in collector system design, along with the advantages of applying cross-substation incorporation (CSI) to the collector system. It proposes a multi-layer optimization framework for achieving optimal topology design, emphasizing the importance of balancing wind turbine capacity deviation between the repowered and expanded parts to achieve optimal economy and reliability. The proposed topology is tested on a benchmark collector system, showing high performance in terms of both short-term and long-term economy and reliability.
