Clinical Implications of the New WHO Classification 2017 for Pituitary Tumors

Wolfgang Saeger et al.

Summary: According to the WHO classification of Pituitary Tumors in 2017, adenomas are classified into three cell lineages based on the expression of Pit-1, T-pit, and SF-1 transcription factors as well as the structure and immunostaining for pituitary hormones. The expression of transcription factors can help to determine the hormonal activity of adenomas.

Pituitary neuroendocrine tumors: a model for neuroendocrine tumor classification

Sylvia L. Asa et al.

Summary: The classification of adenohypophysial neoplasms as pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) reflects their characteristics as epithelial neuroendocrine neoplasms with a spectrum of clinical behaviors. Tumor growth and hormone hypersecretion can cause significant morbidity and mortality in patients. The intense study of PitNETs has provided important information about the importance of cellular differentiation in tumor prognosis.

Corticotroph Aggressive Pituitary Tumors and Carcinomas Frequently Harbor ATRX Mutations

Olivera Casar-Borota et al.

Summary: ATRX mutations are common in a subset of aggressive pituitary tumors, particularly in corticotroph tumors. Performing ATRX immunohistochemistry can help identify patients at risk of developing aggressive and potentially metastatic pituitary tumors.
