Penicillin Allergy Testing Is Cost-Saving: An Economic Evaluation Study

Bernardo Sousa-Pinto et al.

Summary: The study projected that penicillin allergy testing is cost-saving in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with potential average savings in United States dollars for patients. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis showed that testing was the less costly option in 75% of simulations, supporting policies promoting widespread testing of patients with a penicillin allergy label.

Emerging Causes of Drug-Induced Anaphylaxis: A Review of Anaphylaxis-Associated Reports in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS)

Roger J. Yu et al.

Summary: Drug-induced anaphylaxis is a well-known adverse drug reaction, with antibiotics, monoclonal antibodies, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and acetaminophen being the top drug classes associated with anaphylaxis. Antibiotics were highly reported for anaphylaxis overall and anaphylaxis followed by death, while an increasing trend was noted for anaphylaxis to monoclonal antibody therapies.

Epidemiology of anaphylaxis

Luciana Kase Tanno et al.

Summary: The purpose of this review is to explore the current global epidemiological data of anaphylaxis and suggest potential strategies for improved patient care and prevention. Recent studies show that implementing the ICD-11 may provide new perspectives on anaphylaxis mortality and morbidity statistics. Enhancing the quality of epidemiological data can help clarify uncertainties about risk factors, leading to better targeting of strategies to protect at-risk patients and support decision-making for healthcare planning and public health measures.

Current Perspective Regarding the Immunopathogenesis of Drug-Induced Hypersensitivity Syndrome/Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DIHS/DRESS)

Fumi Miyagawa et al.

Summary: DIHS/DRESS is a severe adverse drug reaction involving multiorgan involvement and human herpesvirus reactivation, which can lead to fatal complications. CD4 and CD8 T cells play distinct roles in the pathogenesis of DIHS/DRESS, with CD4 T cells initiating drug allergies and herpesvirus-specific CD8 T cells causing tissue damage.

Performance of ABCD-10 and SCORTEN mortality prediction models in a cohort of patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis

Michael J. Duplisea et al.

Summary: The ABCD-10 model was proposed as an alternative to SCORTEN for predicting in-hospital mortality in patients with SJS/TEN, but in a study at a large tertiary burn center, SCORTEN was found to be a better predictor of inpatient mortality. Both models showed good discrimination, but SCORTEN had better calibration for predicting mortality in this patient cohort.
