Copper bioavailability, uptake, toxicity and tolerance in plants: A comprehensive review

Vinod Kumar et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential element for humans and plants, but excessive intake may have detrimental effects on living systems. Monitoring the bioavailability and exposure levels of copper is crucial for prevention of toxicity, especially focusing on the behavior of copper in the soil-plant system.

Glucose modulates copper induced changes in photosynthesis, ion uptake, antioxidants and proline in Cucumis sativus plants

Mohammad Yusuf et al.

Summary: Glucose was found to improve growth, photosynthetic performance, antioxidant capacity, and element uptake in copper-stressed plants. This study suggests that exogenous application of glucose can be used as a vital biochemical approach in alleviating copper-induced toxicity and phytoremediation for excess transition metal removal from polluted soil.

Increased pH-mediated alleviation of copper-toxicity and growth response function in Citrus sinensis seedlings

Li-Ya Cai et al.

Summary: The study showed that increasing pH could alleviate copper toxicity in plants by reducing copper uptake and distribution, improving water and nutrient absorption, and enhancing photosynthesis. The effects of copper toxicity and low pH on citrus seedlings were found to exacerbate each other.

Ectopic expression of a Malus hupehensis Rehd. myo- inositol oxygenase gene (MhMIOX2) enhances tolerance to salt stress

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, two MhMIOXs were cloned from Malus hupehensis Rehd. and their expression was significantly induced under NaCl stress. Heterologous expression of MhMIOX1/2 in poplar and Arabidopsis showed that MhMIOX2 overexpression decreased MI content and improved salt stress tolerance. Overexpression of MhMIOX2 also led to decreased H2O2 and MDA content, as well as elevated activity of ROS-scavenging enzymes in transgenic poplar under salt stress conditions.

Molecular mechanisms for magnesium-deficiency-induced leaf vein lignification, enlargement and cracking in Citrus sinensis revealed by RNA-Seq

Xin Ye et al.

Summary: Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck seedlings were grown under magnesium-sufficiency or magnesium-deficiency conditions for 16 weeks, with RNA-Seq analysis revealing differentially expressed genes in the veins of upper and lower leaves. Factors contributing to magnesium-deficiency-induced lignification, enlargement, and cracking in lower leaves include upregulation of genes related to lignin biosynthesis pathways and activation of reactive oxygen species and phytohormone signaling. Proteome and transcriptome analysis showed a correlation between protein and transcript levels in response to magnesium deficiency.
