Offshore field experiments with in-situ burning of oil: Emissions and burn efficiency

Liv-Guri Faksness et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the smoke plume monitoring, properties of ISB residues, and burn efficiency during six large-scale experimental burns in the North Sea in 2018 and 2019. The results showed that the smoke particles generated during the burns were mainly concentrated within the visible smoke, and the gas concentrations met air quality standards. The burn efficiency varied depending on the type of oil burned.

Comparative toxicity assessment of in situ burn residues to initial and dispersed heavy fuel oil using zebrafish embryos as test organisms

Summary: The study demonstrates that in comparison with the initial oil, ISB residues did not induce greater toxicity in zebrafish embryos, while the use of chemical dispersants increased acute toxicity.

Effects of crude oil and field-generated burned oil residue on Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) larvae

Frederike Keitel-Groner et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of ISB residue on Northern shrimp larvae, showing no significant acute or sublethal effects of ISB residue but significant larval mortality in high concentrations of crude oil. This suggests that ISB could mitigate acute impacts of spilled oil on shrimp larvae.
