Decoupling water environment pressures from economic growth in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Yuying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the decoupling performance and driving factors of economic output and water environment pressure in provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2004 to 2018. The overall trend showed positive decoupling, but the upper reaches of the Yangtze River demonstrated unstable decoupling and tended to deteriorate.

Impacts of urbanization process on PM2.5 pollution in 2+26 cities

Ximing Luo et al.

Summary: The study found a significant positive relationship between the urbanization process and PM2.5 pollution, with the influential mechanisms varying based on cities' developing levels. Therefore, governments should take urban development levels into consideration when formulating PM2.5 concentration control policies.

Can energy efficiency progress reduce PM2.5 concentration in China's cities? Evidence from 105 key environmental protection cities in China, 2004-2015

Kaifeng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper empirically tests the inhibitory effect of China's total factor energy efficiency progress on PM2.5, providing a new evaluation index for energy conservation in China and pointing out an effective path of energy conservation and emission reduction in line with China's current high-quality development strategy. The study uses panel data of 105 key environmental protection cities in China to evaluate total factor energy efficiency and spatial econometric models to test the impact of energy efficiency progress on PM2.5 concentration, showing a significant positive spatial autocorrelation in PM2.5 concentration and the ability of energy efficiency progress to inhibit PM2.5 pollution in local and adjacent cities.

Changes in PM2.5 emissions in China: An extended chain and nested re fi ned laspeyres index decomposition analysis

Summary: This study analyzed the determinants of changes in PM2.5 emissions in different regions and sectors in China between 2005 and 2015. The results showed that emission intensity and energy intensity in the industry sector reduced PM2.5 emissions, while increases in residential income and rural per capita income, as well as urban-rural income gap, contributed to higher PM2.5 emissions.

Spatiotemporal evolution and the driving factors of PM2.5 in Chinese urban agglomerations between 2000 and 2017

Qilong Wu et al.

Summary: The study reveals the spatial distribution and evolution of major driving factors of PM2.5 in nine Chinese key urban agglomerations from 2000 to 2017. Meteorological factors such as temperature and air pressure, and anthropogenic factors like population density and road density were identified as key driving factors. The findings help the Chinese government devise effective strategies to combat pollution.
