The role of megacontinents in the supercontinent cycle

Chong Wang et al.

Summary: Geologists have found that the formation of past three supercontinents were preceded by a megacontinent similar to Gondwana, and this assembly of a megacontinent is considered a crucial precursor to supercontinent amalgamation. The recent assembly of Eurasia is seen as the fourth megacontinent associated with the future supercontinent Amasia.

Onset of plate tectonics by the Eoarchean

Brian F. Windley et al.

Summary: The paper presents evidence suggesting that plate tectonics was already in operation during the Eoarchean period around 4.0 billion years ago. It highlights the presence of two types of plate tectonics - Accretionary Cycle Plate Tectonics and Wilson Cycle Plate Tectonics in the early Earth, leading to the formation and growth of continental landmasses and subsequent continent collisions. The holistic view of crustal growth and continental evolution suggested in the paper provides a robust and testable model of Earth evolution from its early stages to the present day.

A 200-million-year delay in permanent atmospheric oxygenation

Simon W. Poulton et al.

Summary: The rise of atmospheric oxygen had a significant impact on the chemistry of surficial environments and Earth's habitability. Research indicates that atmospheric oxygen levels continued to fluctuate around 2.32 billion years ago, correlating with major perturbations in ocean redox chemistry and climate. Ultimately, permanent atmospheric oxygenation was achieved around 2.22 billion years ago, about 100 million years later than previously estimated.
