Weathering and pedogenesis of sediments and basaltic rocks on Vega Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Rafael G. Siqueira et al.

Summary: The soil formation on Vega Island is mainly influenced by parent material, climate, and landforms, resulting in Gelisols/Cryosols, acid sulfate soils, and basaltic soils being identified. Despite the semiarid climate, pedogenesis is active in the studied soils with the formation of clay minerals, sulfate minerals, and pedogenic Fe-oxides.

Geomorphology of Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctica

Stephen J. A. Jennings et al.

Summary: This study presents a geomorphological map of the northern sector of Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula, covering an area of approximately 250 km(2). The landscape features are influenced by Cretaceous sedimentary and Neogene volcanic geology, sculpted by ice masses during glacial periods. The study area can be broadly separated into three geomorphological sectors dominated by glacierised, paraglacial, and periglacial processes.

Soil predictors are crucial for modelling vegetation distribution and its responses to climate change

Guilherme de Castro Oliveira et al.

Summary: Research has focused on improving bioclimatic envelope models by combining climate and soil predictors to predict vegetation dynamics in semiarid regions of Brazil. Using a variety of machine learning algorithms and global circulation models, the model showed an expansion of vegetation in arid areas and the impact on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
