Global-scale emergence of continental crust during the Mesoarchean-early Neoarchean

The widespread occurrence of low O-18 magmas suggests the emergence of substantial volumes of continental crust, possibly due to high-temperature meteoric water-rock interaction. The timing of this magmatism coincides with the development of subaerial large igneous provinces, a downward shift in isotopic values, and an intermittent increase in atmospheric oxygen, indicating a significant event in Earth's history.
