Short-Course Systemic and Topical Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs: Impact on Adverse Renal Events in Older Adults with Co-Morbid Disease

Cynthia Ciwei Lim et al.

Summary: The study found that both short-course systemic and topical NSAIDs were associated with an increased risk of acute adverse renal events compared to older adults not taking NSAIDs. However, among older adults with certain comorbidities, topical NSAIDs were found to have a reduced incidence of acute kidney injury and/or hyperkalemia compared to short-course systemic NSAIDs.

Burden of Renal Events Associated with Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs in Patients with Osteoarthritis and Chronic Low Back Pain: A Retrospective Database Study

Takayuki Katsuno et al.

Summary: In patients with osteoarthritis and chronic low back pain, prolonged and consistent use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) significantly increases the risk of renal events, especially in elderly patients and those with comorbidities. Careful consideration is recommended for NSAID use in patients with chronic kidney disease or at high risk for it.
