Direct contact membrane distillation: A sensitivity analysis and an outlook on membrane effective thermal conductivity

M. S. Ismail et al.

Summary: A rigorous and high-fidelity two-dimensional numerical model for a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) module has been developed to investigate the sensitivity of key performance indicators to operational conditions and membrane characteristics. It was shown that more appropriate models are required to accurately estimate certain parameters, leading to the proposal of a new model.

Modeling and multi-objective optimization of integrated MED-TVC desalination system and gas power plant for waste heat harvesting

Hesam Bazargan Harandi et al.

Summary: A multi-effect desalination-thermal vapor compression (MED-TVC) system utilizing waste heat from a gas power plant was designed and optimized to achieve highest gain output ratio (GOR) and lowest total annual cost through a multi-objective optimization approach. The heating steam temperature was found to be significantly affected by the GOR, according to the study.

Modeling of heat and mass transfer in direct contact membrane distillation: effect of counter diffusion velocity

Hesam Bazargan Harandi et al.

Summary: Membrane distillation is a non-isothermal separation process using porous hydrophobic membranes. The study found that counter diffusion velocity significantly affects the accuracy of total flux prediction, and investigated the effects of different parameters on gain output ratio and transmembrane flux. Increases in feed inlet temperature and linear velocity were shown to enhance gain output ratio.
