Violins and cellos from Portuguese collections. A tree ring study as a historical source of the Portuguese heritage

Alexandra Lauw et al.

Summary: The first dendrochronological study on 13 violins and cellos from Portuguese workshops of the XVIII and XIX centuries aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the dates and origins of the top woods used in the instruments. The study also looked into assembly techniques and compared growth patterns to determine wood sources. The study confirmed attributions for most instruments but highlighted errors in two violins, emphasizing the historical evidence of Portuguese maritime wood trade with European countries, particularly Italy.
