Synthesis of (111) facet-engineered MgO nanosheet from coal fly ash and its superior catalytic performance for high-temperature water gas shift reaction

Binbin Qian et al.

Summary: High-purity magnesium hydroxide nanosheets were successfully synthesized from brown coal fly ash waste using a sequence of leaching, precipitation, and ethanol-mediated hydrothermal processing. The resulting nanosheets exhibited specific surface area of 100 m2/g and an aspect ratio of 11.8, showing superior catalytic performance for high-temperature water gas shift reaction when loaded with Fe3+. This study opens up potential for valorizing fly ash and other magnesium-bearing solid wastes into high-value materials for catalytic applications.

Surface and Grain Boundary Energies as well as Surface Mass Transport in Polycrystalline MgO

R. Chatzimichail et al.

Summary: The sessile drop technique was used to measure contact angles of liquid metals Ag and Cu in contact with polycrystalline magnesium oxide (MgO) in specific temperature ranges. Results indicated non-wetting behavior and allowed for the calculation of MgO surface energy temperature dependence. Further experiments showed that surface diffusion is the dominant mechanism of mass transport in MgO.

Summary: Metal oxide nanoparticles, particularly magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles, have unique properties such as antibacterial effects, superoxide anion production, and reactivity/stability for various applications. Challenges in using MgO nanoparticles include controlling membrane pore diameter, assessing nanoparticle release from food packaging materials, and improving sensitivity and reproducibility in sensor applications. Furthermore, optimizing pore structures is important for enhancing electron transport in supercapacitors and semiconductors.
