Catalytic Synthesis of Conjugated Azopolymers from Aromatic Diazides

John M. Andjaba et al.

Summary: Conjugated polymers containing main chain azoarene repeat units were synthesized by a dinickel catalyzed N=N coupling reaction of aromatic diazides. The polymerization process has broad substrate scope and compatibility with heterocycles commonly found in high performance organic materials. Additionally, azopolymers possess unique properties due to the functionality of the azo linkages, allowing for reversible reduction under mild conditions.

Sequence Control from Mixtures: Switchable Polymerization Catalysis and Future Materials Applications

Arron C. Deacy et al.

Summary: The article discusses an efficient and broadly applicable method for producing copolymers using switchable polymerization catalysis, which utilizes a single catalyst switched between different catalytic cycles to prepare block sequence selective copolymers from monomer mixtures. It presents the principles of this catalysis, catalyst design criteria, selectivity and structural copolymer characterization tools, as well as the properties of resulting copolymers.

Summary: This study efficiently prepares copolymers and blends meeting sustainable criteria using a single catalyst and commercial monomers. The resulting polymers are able to enhance toughness and elongation at break of bioplastics without compromising other properties. The selective polymerization catalysis provides a straightforward means to improve bioplastics performances.

Photocontrolled lactide ROP by the light-regulated release of potassium acetate from an azobenzene-bridged crown ether

Quentin De Roover et al.

Summary: The azobenzene-bridged 15-crown-5 ether was successfully utilized as a photoswitchable cocatalyst to modulate the catalytic activity of potassium acetate in the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide. By alternating exposure to daylight and UV light, the ion pair-like structure of KOAc was transformed on-demand, resulting in effective modulation of the polymerization speed from slow to fast.

Mg(ii) heterodinuclear catalysts delivering carbon dioxide derived multi-block polymers

Gloria Rosetto et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide derived polymers are becoming useful materials in various applications, requiring more active and selective catalysts for structural diversity. Highly active catalysts can exhibit controllable selectivity for enchainment of mixtures of different compounds, leading to the creation of new polymers with regular carbon dioxide and biomass derived linkages.

Reversible redox controlled acids for cationic ring-opening polymerization

Michael J. Supej et al.

Summary: Advancements in externally controlled polymerization methodologies have enabled the synthesis of novel polymeric structures and architectures, with a particular focus on the development of ring-opening polymerization methods for biocompatible and biodegradable block polymers. The use of ferrocene-derived acid catalysts with reversible acidity control shows promise for chemically and electrochemically controlling the ROP of cyclic esters.

Electrochemically switchable polymerization from surface-anchored molecular catalysts

Miao Qi et al.

Summary: The redox-switchable polymerizations of lactide and epoxides were extended to the solid state by anchoring an iron-based polymerization catalyst to TiO2 nanoparticles, allowing for surface-initiated polymerization reactions that produced polymer brushes with composition dictated by the oxidation state of the complex. The electrically addressable surface formed by depositing catalyst-functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles on fluorine-doped tin oxide demonstrated spatial control in redox-switchable polymerization reactions and the potential for patterning surfaces with distinct polymer brushes featuring different physical properties.

Accelerating effect of crown ethers on the lactide polymerization catalysed by potassium acetate

Sebastien Moins et al.

Summary: In this experiment, crown ethers were used to accelerate the polymerization of l-lactide initiated by an exogenous alcohol and catalyzed by potassium acetate. Among the crown ethers tested, 18-crown-6 showed the fastest polymerization kinetics, outperforming the pristine catalyst by at least 73%. This was attributed to the complexation of the KOAc ion pair by 18-crown-6, which facilitated the activation of the propagating alcohol for the ring-opening reaction of l-LA.

A switchable dimeric yttrium complex and its three catalytic states in ring opening polymerization

Shijie Deng et al.

Summary: A dimeric yttrium phenoxide complex supported by a ferrocene Schiff base ligand was synthesized and studied for its catalytic activity in ring opening polymerization. Oxidation was found to affect the catalytic activity differently in cyclic esters and epoxides polymerization. Block copolymer syntheses using a redox switch were also performed.

Theoretical insight into the opposite redox activity of iron complexes toward the ring opening polymerization of lactide and epoxide

Xiaowei Xu et al.

Summary: The origin of opposite reactivity in the ring-opening polymerizations of lactide (LA) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) catalyzed by redox-switchable bis(imino)pyridine iron complexes has been computationally elucidated. Larger geometrical deformation leads to lower activity of the oxidized form (Fe-ox) of the iron catalyst toward LA polymerization compared to the reduced analogue (Fe-red), while the higher activity of Fe-ox toward CHO polymerization is attributed to stronger interaction with CHO moieties due to its higher electrophilicity. This theoretical understanding has led to the computational modeling of various Fe-ox analogues with modified substituents to increase their electrophilicity and lower energy barriers in CHO enchainment.
