Indigenous Knowledge about Consumption of Edible Insects in South Africa

Zabentungwa T. Hlongwane et al.

Summary: Edible insects are a traditional practice rich in nutrients, playing an essential role in improving the livelihoods of people in rural areas of South Africa. While most residents consume insects in Limpopo, there is a decline in entomophagy in KZN, possibly due to western dietary influences, discomfort associated with insect consumption, and a decrease in wild insect availability. Mopane worms and termites are the preferred insect species in Limpopo and KZN, respectively.

Chemical Composition and Nutritional Value of Different Species of Vespa Hornets

Sampat Ghosh et al.

Summary: Through genetic identification and analysis of nutrient compositions, the study found that the edible broods of Vespa hornets in China and Korea contain varying levels of protein and amino acids. The high content of unsaturated fatty acids in hornets could potentially provide health benefits, including reducing cardiovascular disorders and inflammation. Additionally, the high minerals content in hornets, such as iron, zinc, and a high K/Na ratio, may help mitigate mineral deficiencies in populations with inadequate nutrition.

Dietary Modulation of Oxidative Stress From Edible Insects: A Mini-Review

Veronica D'Antonio et al.

Summary: Edible insects are considered a nutritious and environmentally sustainable alternative to animal proteins. Studies have found that edible insects have antioxidant properties, which can help counteract oxidative stress and reduce the formation of oxidation damage markers. Further research is needed to assess the efficacy of edible insect consumption in modulating redox status in humans.

Field Cage Assessment of Feeding Damage by Riptortus pedestris on Soybeans in China

Wenjing Li et al.

Summary: Riptortus pedestris is a serious pest of soybeans, causing significant field damage losses. The study found that the R-4 stage of soybeans was the most sensitive to R. pedestris injury, and damage intensity increased with higher pest densities. Additionally, soybean nutrition factors changed after suffering R. pedestris injury.

Soybean hawkmoth (Clanis bilineata tsingtauica) as food ingredients: a review

Yu Gao et al.

Summary: The soybean hawkmoth, also known as CBT, is a traditional edible insect in East Asia with rich amino acids and fatty acids, meeting human nutritional needs. CBT larvae are high in protein, low in fat, easily absorbed, and can be used as an alternative food ingredient to meet global demand for animal protein.

Nutritional compositions of two edible insects: Oryctes rhinoceros larva and Zonocerus variegatus

Emeka Godwin Anaduaka et al.

Summary: Insects such as Oryctes rhinoceros larva and Zonocerus variegatus are rich in nutrients and can be potential sources of food with high nutritional value. Oryctes rhinoceros larvae have higher levels of crude protein and carbohydrates, while Zonocerus variegatus have higher levels of crude lipids. Both insects contain rich mineral components and their anti-nutrient values are within tolerable levels, making them good sources of macro and micronutrients. Oryctes rhinoceros may be a better source of nutrients due to its valuable macromolecule contents.
