SARS-CoV-2 has been circulating in northern Italy since December 2019: Evidence from environmental monitoring

Giuseppina La Rosa et al.

Summary: Italy had SARS-CoV-2 circulating as early as the end of 2019, with the virus spreading in different geographic regions simultaneously. The study emphasizes the importance of environmental surveillance as an early warning system to monitor virus levels and identify outbreaks before they are officially reported to the healthcare system.

A framework for identifying the recent origins of mobile antibiotic resistance genes

Stefan Ebmeyer et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic resistance genes is influenced by mobile resistance genes acquired through horizontal gene transfer. Majority of the resistance genes originated from taxa associated with infection in humans and domestic animals, likely due to antibiotic selection pressure.

AgroSeek: a system for computational analysis of environmental metagenomic data and associated metadata

Xiao Liang et al.

Summary: AgroSeek is a centralized web-based system that provides computational tools tailored for researchers and users in the agricultural sector interested in tracking and mitigating the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through metagenomic data analysis and comparison. AgroSeek integrates rich user-provided metagenomic data and metadata to facilitate user-friendly analysis, comparison, and prediction. By incorporating publicly-contributed data sets and flexible metadata templates, AgroSeek supports data sharing and large-scale comparative and predictive analysis to assist policy makers, stakeholders, and the public in decision-making.

Building the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance network in veterinary medicine (EARS-Vet)

Rodolphe Mader et al.

Summary: Establishing the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance network in Veterinary medicine (EARS-Vet) is proposed to fill the gap in current AMR surveillance efforts, provide useful information for policymakers and veterinary practitioners, and support antimicrobial stewardship in animal health. Strong political commitment at national and EU/EEA levels is required for the success of EARS-Vet.

US COVID-19 State Government Public Dashboards: An Expert Review

Naleef Fareed et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze how COVID-19 state dashboards deployed information, system function, and user interface, as well as group and characterize them based on collected data. The results showed significant variations in dashboard design practices among states, with a six-cluster solution providing insights into specific practices. States generally aligned with goals set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but there were areas where improvements were needed.

Evaluation of Metagenomic-Enabled Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance at a Conventional Wastewater Treatment Plant

Haniyyah J. Majeed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated antibiotic resistance patterns at different stages of a conventional WWTP, finding that total ARG abundance decreased by approximately 50% from influent to effluent. While 90% of ARGs in the effluent were also detected in influent, taxonomic linkage patterns in effluent were more similar to regional clinical data than patterns in influent. Analysis of resistomes across sampling events helped identify candidate ARGs for surveillance and provided metrics for predicting relative ARG mobility and likelihood of being carried by pathogens.

Hetty Blaak et al.

Summary: The prevalence of CPE in the Dutch population was estimated to be approximately 0.02%. CPE were detected at the majority of wastewater treatment plants, highlighting the importance of wastewater surveillance in monitoring the distribution of CPE.
