In Vitro Mineralization of Collagen

Bernette Maria Oosterlaken et al.

Summary: Collagen mineralization is a biological process found in various skeletal elements in the animal kingdom, with a focus on understanding bone formation processes and synthesizing tissue engineering scaffolds. This paper reviews in vitro efforts towards collagen mineralization, primarily centered on hydroxyapatite and silica, with a proposed general mechanism for intrafibrillar mineralization of collagen. Future outlooks for improving collagen-based tissue engineering scaffolds are also discussed.

Time-Resolved Cryo-TEM Study on the Formation of Iron Hydroxides in a Collagen Matrix

Bernette M. Oosterlaken et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mineralization of collagen with iron hydroxides using a bio-inspired coprecipitation reaction. It found that nanoparticles form inside collagen, while platelet-shaped green rust crystals form outside. When poly(aspartic acid) is present, mineralization of nanoparticles inside collagen occurs. This process is similar to hydroxyapatite mineralization, showing the potential for mineralization with iron hydroxides inside collagen.
