Ontogenetic endocranial shape change in alligators and ostriches and implications for the development of the non-avian dinosaur endocranium

Krishna Hu et al.

Summary: Ostrich brains maintain their shape throughout postnatal growth, while alligator brains change from a bird-like shape in hatchlings to a crocodilian shape in adults. Birds retain paedomorphic dinosaur traits in their brain development, while crocodiles exhibit peramorphic traits.

First record of a giant bird (Ornithuromorpha) from the uppermost Maastrichtian of the Southern Pyrenees, northeast Spain

Manuel Perez-Pueyo et al.

Summary: This study describes a fossil cervical vertebra of a giant bird from the late Maastrichtian of Europe, supporting its inclusion within the clade Ornithuromorpha. The vertebra is distinct from previously known giant birds, indicating that large-sized birds were present in Europe during the late Campanian to the Late Maastrichtian periods.

Braincase anatomy of the Paleocene crocodyliform Rhabdognathus revealed through high resolution computed tomography

Arthur Erb et al.

Summary: Dyrosaurids were specialized marine relatives of modern crocodylians that survived the K-Pg extinction event. Recently, a CT scan of a well-preserved skull of a Paleocene dyrosaurid revealed novel features of its cranial endocast, inner ear, and paratympanic sinuses. These findings suggest unique neuroanatomical modifications in dyrosaurids for agile predatory near-shore ecology.

Braincase anatomy of extant Crocodylia, with new insights into the development and evolution of the neurocranium in crocodylomorphs

Ivan T. Kuzmin et al.

Summary: Present-day crocodylians have a relatively fixed and highly modified skull structure, with multiple contact points and articulations between different skeletal elements. Most crocodylians' braincase elements are influenced by multiple pneumatic sinuses, and there are consistent variations between different taxa.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of including postcranial information on the tree topology of Allodaposuchidae family, revealing a significant phylogenetic signal in postcranial elements. The phylogenetic relationships of allodaposuchids within Eusuchia are reassessed, with new and improved diagnoses provided for each species.

The Tetrapod Fossil Record from the Uppermost Maastrichtian of the Ibero-Armorican Island: An Integrative Review Based on the Outcrops of the Western Tremp Syncline (Aragon, Huesca Province, NE Spain)

Manuel Perez-Pueyo et al.

Summary: The South-Pyrenean Basin in northeastern Spain has a diverse record of Upper Cretaceous vertebrate fossils, including the remains of some of the last European dinosaurs before the K-Pg extinction event. The Western Tremp Syncline in the Aragonese area of the Southern Pyrenees contains sedimentary units dated to the late Maastrichtian, with fossil remains of dinosaurs, crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs, and other tetrapods. This site is one of the best places in Europe to study the latest vertebrate assemblages before the end-Cretaceous mass extinction.

Quantifying neurovascular canal branching patterns reveals a shared crocodylian arrangement

Emily J. Lessner

Summary: This study adapted traditional stream-ordering methods to analyze highly branched dendritic cranial neurovascular canals in crocodylian taxa, revealing a shared branching pattern consistent with current understanding of sensory abilities and behaviors in crocodylians. The method showcases the comparative utility of morphology-based hypotheses of sensory and physiological evolution in various taxa and anatomical structures.

NEUROANATOMICAL AND NEUROSENSORIAL ANALYSIS OF THE LATE CRETACEOUS BASAL EUSUCHIAN AGARESUCHUS FONTISENSIS (CUENCA, SPAIN)

Alejandro Serrano-Martinez et al.

Summary: Agaresuchus fontisensis is an allodaposuchid crocodile from Late Cretaceous Spain, with neuroanatomy resembling other mesoeucrocodylians and cognitive capabilities similar to other eusuchians. Its olfactory acuity is low compared to crocodilians and closer to alligatoroids, while its visual acuity is similar to a sympatric allodaposuchid species found in the same fossil site.
