Proton irradiation assisted localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in 304 nuclear grade stainless steel in simulated primary PWR water

Ping Deng et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the irradiation dose promoted localized corrosion at the slip step and grain boundary in irradiated 304 nuclear grade stainless steel, primarily due to strain concentration induced by enhanced localized deformation and depletion of Cr at grain boundary. The synergic effect of enhanced localized deformation and localized corrosion at the slip step and grain boundary caused a higher cracking susceptibility in the irradiated steel.

Microstructure, mechanical properties and IASCC susceptibility of stainless steel baffle bolts after 30 years of operation in a PWR

Summary: This study investigated the effects of neutron irradiation on the material properties of stainless steel in a nuclear power plant core. The structural degradation was assessed by analyzing microstructure, mechanical behavior, and stress corrosion susceptibility. The results showed minimal void swelling, saturation of fracture toughness values above a certain dpa, and susceptibility to irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC).

Grain boundary oxidation of proton-irradiated nuclear grade stainless steel in simulated primary water of pressurized water reactor

Ping Deng et al.

Summary: The study investigated grain boundary oxidation of proton-irradiated 304 nuclear grade stainless steel in primary water of pressurized water reactor by studying the microstructure of the oxide and oxide precursor on an atom-by-atom basis. The results showed that increasing irradiation dose promoted grain boundary oxidation, leading to the formation of different oxide and oxide precursor. The correlation of oxide and oxide precursor with the grain boundary oxidation behavior was discussed in detail.
