The integration of bipolar electrode (BPE) with electrochemiluminescence (ECL), known as BP-ECL, shows great potential for analytical applications due to the excellent portability of BPE and intuitive readout of ECL. Signal amplification strategies are crucial for the development of highly sensitive BP-ECL sensing systems, and a systematic understanding of sensing formats and modes is meaningful for sensor design. An overview of signal amplification strategies and sensing formats in BP-ECL sensing assays holds promising potentials for analytical assays and can aid in understanding recent advances in the flourishing BP-ECL sensing fields.
The integration of bipolar electrode (BPE) with electrochemiluminescence (ECL), namely BP-ECL, has presented great promises for analytical application owing to the merits of excellent portability from BPE and intuitive readout from ECL. Signal amplification strategies play important roles in the development of highly sensitive BP-ECL sensing systems. Furthermore, systematic comprehension of sensing formats and modes is meaningful for the design of BP-ECL sensors. Therefore, a specialized overview on signal amplification strategies and sensing formats in BP-ECL sensing assays holds promising potentials in analytical assays. In this literature review, we initially introduced BP-ECL fundamentals and discussed recent progress on signal amplification strategies in BP-ECL sensing assays. Additionally, miscellaneous sensing modes and formats of BP-ECL systems are highlighted. We anticipated this paper could aid the comprehension toward recent advances in the flourishing BP-ECL sensing fields. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
