Mechanistic Study on Effect of Electron Donors in Propylene Polymerization Using the Ziegler-Natta Catalyst

Xing Guo et al.

Summary: TiCl4/MgCl2 catalysts are the main industrial catalysts for isotactic polypropylene, but the mechanism is not fully understood. Different electron donors can promote the activity of the Ti active site and maintain regioselectivity. In some cases, specific donors can enhance the stereoselectivity in isotactic polymerization.

Summary: This study demonstrates the assembly of porous microspheres from rhombic MgCl2 nanocrystals with laterals by utilizing POSS molecules, which can then be used for ethylene polymerization after TiCl4 immobilization. Experimental evidence shows the direct impact of THF adsorption on the structure and performance of the active sites formed on MgCl2 surfaces.

DNP-SENS Formulation Protocols To Study Surface Sites in Ziegler-Natta Catalyst MgCl2 Supports Modified with Internal Donors

Alexander Yakimov et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that using dynamic nuclear polarization surface-enhanced NMR spectroscopy (DNP-SENS) can reveal the interaction details between the internal donor and the support in heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta propylene polymerization catalysts. By optimizing the sample preparation protocol, high sensitivity NMR signal enhancements have been achieved, leading to significant time savings in experiments. This approach has successfully been applied to uncover the molecular structures and interactions of internal donors on the support.

Electronic Properties of Ti Sites in Ziegler-Natta Catalysts

Alessandro Piovano et al.

Summary: Although Ziegler-Natta (ZN) catalysts are crucial in the polyolefin market, a comprehensive understanding of their properties at the molecular level is still lacking. This study uses UV-vis and Ti L-2,L-3-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopies, along with theoretical simulations, to investigate the electronic properties of three ZN precatalysts and their corresponding catalysts activated by triethylaluminum (TEAl). The research provides evidence for the presence of monomeric 6-fold-coordinated Ti4+ species in all precatalysts, sheds light on the correlation between Ti site electron density and olefin insertion activation energy, and demonstrates the impact of effective charge on the Ti sites on olefin pi-complexation.
