Mechanism based diffusion-reaction modelling for predicting the influence of SARA composition and ageing stage on spurt completion time and diffusivity in bitumen

Uwe Muhlich et al.

Summary: This study examines the advantages of using diffusion-reaction models based on continuum thermodynamics of irreversible processes for reacting mixtures, through a specific model for spurt oxidation in bitumen. The predicted spurt completion times were compared with initial composition parameters, showing consistency with experimental results. Additionally, the model predicted a significant decrease in diffusivity due to oxidation in the absence of out-diffusion of reaction products.

Development of preliminary transfer functions for performance predictions in FIexPAVE™

Yizhuang David Wang et al.

Summary: Mechanistic-empirical design and performance-related specifications are advanced tools for designing pavements and determining incentives/disincentives for paving contracts, requiring reliable prediction of pavement performance throughout the design life. FIexPAVE (TM) is a prediction program that utilizes three-dimensional viscoelastic finite element analysis and moving loads to calculate pavement mechanical responses under traffic loading and climate conditions.

Presentation of Predictive Models for Two-objective Optimization of Moisture and Fatigue Damages Caused by Deicers in Asphalt Mixtures

Vahid Najafi Moghaddam Gilani et al.

Summary: The study indicates that adding deicers to asphalt mixtures may decrease moisture sensitivity and fatigue failure, and using different additives like nanohydrated lime as an anti-stripping agent can help reduce this impact. Genetic programming can be used to obtain the optimal additive percentage to achieve the best performance in terms of tensile strength and fatigue life of asphalt mixtures.

Investigation of the Impact of Deicer Materials on Thermodynamic Parameters and Its Relationship with Moisture Susceptibility in Modified Asphalt Mixtures by Carbon Nanotube

Vahid Najafi Moghaddam Gilani et al.

Summary: The study found that using CNT can promote the modification of asphalt, increase its penetration index and softening point, and improve the sensitivity of samples to temperature changes. In addition, using CNT can also increase the surface free energy (SFE) of modified asphalt, making it more adhesive. Under saturated conditions with deicer materials and distilled water, CNT can also increase the wet-to-dry dynamic modulus ratio of modified mixtures, enhancing the resistance of samples to moisture.
