Rheology, setting and hydration of calcined clay blended cements in interaction with PCE-based superplasticisers

Ricarda Sposito et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that PCE-based superplasticisers have good dispersion effectiveness even with challenging calcined phyllosilicates. The physical properties of calcined materials largely determine the demand for superplasticiser, especially in terms of key parameters for hydration and setting.

Mineralogical characterization and reactivity test of common clays suitable as supplementary cementitious material

Matthias Maier et al.

Summary: This study investigated 13 different clay-rich raw materials, focusing on available common clays from German deposits, and found that besides kaolinite content, other parameters such as type and quantity of 2:1 clay minerals and degree of kaolinite disorder must be considered in order to assess the potential of the raw materials. The assessment of pozzolanic reactivity was done using R-3 calorimetry test and solubility of silicon and aluminum ions in alkaline solution, showing comparable results.

Effectiveness of PCE superplasticizers in calcined clay blended cements

Ran Li et al.

Summary: This study found that using calcined clay in composite cements significantly increases water demand, while PCE superplasticizers have a significant impact on flow properties. The research suggests that commercially available PCE products can effectively improve the flow performance of OPC/CC blended cements.

Hydration of cubic tricalcium aluminate in the presence of calcined clays

Matthias Maier et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of different calcined clays on the sulfate balance in cementitious systems, finding that all calcined clays accelerated ettringite formation and sulfate depletion, while nanolimestone exhibited the opposite effect. This suggests that the adsorption of SO4 ions and/or Ca-SO4-complexes on the surface of calcined clay particles inhibits the retardation of C(3)A hydration, with additional Al ions impeding sulfate adjustment in Al-rich systems.

Reaction kinetics during early hydration of calcined phyllosilicates in clinker-free model systems

Summary: Investigations were conducted on nearly pure, calcined phyllosilicates (meta-phyllosilicates) in clinker-free model systems with and without sulfate. The presence of sulfate affected the reactivity of the meta-phyllosilicates, with metakaolin system showing pronounced early reactions and formation of calcium silicate hydrate during hydration.

Interaction of individual meta clays with polycarboxylate (PCE) superplasticizers in cement investigated via dispersion, zeta potential and sorption measurements

Marlene Schmid et al.

Summary: Polycarboxylate (PCE) comb polymers were investigated as dispersants for suspensions of individual calcined clay samples. Results showed that the methallyl ether (HPEG) based PCE outperformed the methacrylate ester (MPEG) based PCE, but meta illite could not be satisfactorily dispersed.

Approaches to achieve fluidity retention in low-carbon calcined clay blended cements

Ran Li et al.

Summary: High meta kaolin content in calcined clay blended cement is beneficial for early strength development but hinders the dispersing effectiveness of PCE superplasticizers and makes slump retention difficult. By introducing a new admixture formulation, a significant improvement in fluidity retention can be achieved in such composite cements. This is done through a synergistic effect of a high water-reducing type HPEG PCE and a PCE-LDH nanocomposite.
