Development of a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm for implementing circular economy strategies in the concrete industry

Mahjoob NoParast et al.

Summary: The study proposed a sustainable closed-loop supply chain (SCLSC) model to reduce the environmental impacts of concrete manufacturing. The model, based on a multi-objective approach, includes sub-systems like customers, suppliers, manufacturing, and recycling stations, and uses a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm to solve solutions. The research showed that using more recycled aggregates can lower excavation of quarries, but transportation distance determines the choice of green cement incorporation.

Summary: Two hybrid machine learning algorithms were used to develop predictive models for the compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), with the interval type-2 fuzzy inference system (IT2FIS) outperforming the type-1 fuzzy inference system (T1FIS). The study also confirmed the high accuracy of the IT2FIS model compared to previous studies, showing that concrete age, ratio of natural fine aggregate to total natural aggregate, and superplasticizer to binder ratio have positive impacts on compressive strength.

Simulation of humidity and temperature distribution in green roof with pozzolana as drainage layer: Influence of outdoor seasonal weather conditions and internal ceiling temperature

Mostafa Kazemi et al.

Summary: The study found that the insulation performance and humidity and temperature variations of green roof systems are influenced by various factors, including layer thickness and drainage layer material. Thicker substrate and pozzolana as drainage layer are recommended for winter, while thinner substrate and drainage layer perform better in summer. Moreover, the fluctuation of internal ceiling temperature is higher in a system with variable inside temperature compared to one with constant inside temperature.

Prediction of the resilient modulus of non-cohesive subgrade soils and unbound subbase materials using a hybrid support vector machine method and colliding bodies optimization algorithm

Nasrin Heidarabadizadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, a support vector machine hybridized with the colliding bodies optimization algorithm was used to model the resilient modulus of road materials. The SVMCBO method was found to be more accurate than the ANN method in predicting the M-R of non-cohesive subgrade soils and unbound subbase materials. Parametric analysis and gamma tests were conducted to evaluate the most effective parameters for the prediction of the M-R of subbase-subgrade materials.

Wafaa Mohamed Shaban et al.

Summary: This study developed three fuzzy-metaheuristic ensembles based on ANFIS for forecasting the compressive strength of brick aggregate concrete. Among the different models, the ANFIS-PSO model outperformed the hybrid GA and FFA models, with a correlation coefficient (R-2) of 0.913, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.057, and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.032. The sensitivity analysis showed that the cement content and specific gravity of brick aggregates significantly influenced the model output.

Summary: Steel-confined concrete demonstrates strength improvement, concrete stiffness, damage reduction, and delayed failure after exposure to fire. However, the presence of tire rubber aggregate can improve plasticity and energy absorption, but may decrease concrete strength in case of exposure to fire. Additionally, increasing exposure temperature and crumb rubber replacement ratio leads to an increase in the strain at peak stress of steel tube confined rubberized concrete.
