Sustainable use of red mud in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC): Design and performance evaluation

Dongshuai Hou et al.

Summary: This paper explores the use of red mud as a mineral additive in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). Results show that adding red mud can enhance the early-age durability of UHPC, but reduce workability and mechanical properties. Applications in complex-shaped buildings may be affected, but still feasible for general construction.

Dynamic compressive behaviour of hybrid basalt-polypropylene fibre-reinforced concrete under confining pressure: Experimental characterisation and strength criterion

Qiang Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dynamic compressive behavior of HBPRC under confining pressure, showing strain rate and confining pressure dependence. The addition of basalt and polypropylene fibers can reduce failure degree of concrete and improve shear failure feature. Furthermore, the study established an empirical dynamic strength criterion for HBPRC considering the effects of fiber and pore structure.

Research on internal monitoring of reinforced concrete under accelerated corrosion, using XCT and DIC technology

Xiaoxian Wang et al.

Summary: Reinforcement corrosion and induced cracking are major durability issues for concrete structures in marine environments. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques were used to monitor corrosion and analyze internal strain variation. The results showed that the XCT images reflected cracking positions and the corrosion process, while DIC could quantify internal strain evolution. The study verified the feasibility of combining XCT and DIC by applying a corrosion expansion cracking model and determining corrosion expansion stresses for different steel bars.

Effect of steam curing on compressive strength and microstructure of high volume ultrafine fly ash cement mortar

Jin Yang et al.

Summary: The study showed that wet-milled UFA can effectively enhance the compressive strength of steam-cured concrete, improve pore structure, and promote the formation of C-S-H gel. In comparison to extending the curing duration, increasing the curing temperature is more efficient in facilitating the incorporation of aluminum from fly ash into calcium silicate hydrates.

Comprehensive resistance of fair-faced concrete suffering from sulfate attack under marine environments

Chang Honglei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the sulfate resistance performance of fair-faced concrete used in coastal subway stations through simulated sulfate attack conditions and actual marine environments. The results showed that fair-faced concrete exhibited superior sulfate resistance, even after exposure to sulfate attack conditions. Sulfate corrosion resulted in significant coarsening of surface morphology, requiring special attention in marine environments. Additionally, the degree of coarseness decreased with an increase in sulfate resistance coefficient, indicating that superior sulfate resistance can ensure durability and delay surface morphology degradation.

Comparative analysis of dynamic constitutive response of hybrid fibre-reinforced concrete with different matrix strengths

Qiang Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the volume of hybrid fibers in concrete can enhance the strain rate effect of dynamic compressive strength, but this effect decreases with higher matrix strength. Toughness increases with higher strain rates, volume of hybrid fibers, and matrix strength.

Effect of steam curing regimes on temperature and humidity gradient, permeability and microstructure of concrete

Jinyan Shi et al.

Summary: Steam curing has a detrimental effect on the long-term performance of concrete by changing the internal temperature-humidity field, leading to low compactness and high permeability. Different surface covering methods can reduce surface porosity and enhance impermeability of steam-cured concrete. The improvement effect of surface covering methods on impermeability becomes more pronounced with increasing treatment temperature.

The effect of steam curing regimes on the chloride resistance and pore size of high-strength green concrete

Abdullah M. Zeyad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of steam curing regimes (SCRs) on high-strength green concrete (HSGC) incorporating ultrafine palm oil fuel ash (U-POFA) as a partial substitute for cement. The results showed that using a high volume of U-POFA in HSGC led to improved compressive strength, chloride resistance, and microstructure properties at different ages, with the enhancement being influenced by U-POFA replacement rates, temperature, and steam curing period.

Effect of environmental pH values on phase composition and microstructure of Portland cement paste under sulfate attack

Gaozhan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of pH value on cement hydration products under sulfate attack. Lowering the pH value of sulfate solution promotes the formation of gypsum crystals and inhibits the ettringite formation in cement paste. The research also shows that the reduction of pH value accelerates the transformation reactions of aluminate phases and enhances the silicate polymerization.

Peizhen Xu et al.

Summary: The inhibitory performance and mechanism of compound nitrite with D-sodium gluconate on carbon steel in simulated concrete pore solution were studied. The results showed effective hindrance of pitting corrosion by the corrosion inhibitor, enhanced stability of the passive film on carbon steel, and competition with chloride ions for adsorption, weakening the adsorption of chloride ions on the steel surface.
