A quantitative assessment of the damage mechanisms of CFRP laminates interleaved by PA66 electrospun nanofibers using acoustic emission

Reza Mohammadi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding nanofibrous mats can significantly reduce damage mechanisms in carbon fiber reinforced polymers, including matrix cracking, fiber breakage, and fiber/matrix debonding. The combination of acoustic emission and scanning electron microscope techniques is useful for assessing the damage mechanisms.

Enhancing the fracture toughness of laminated composites through carbon nanotube belt stitching

Huigai Li et al.

Summary: In this study, unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastics laminates were stitched using ultra-thin continuous carbon nanotube (CNT) belts in order to enhance their interlaminar properties, specifically interlaminar fracture toughness. The results showed significant improvements in mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness after CNT belt stitching, attributed to bridge-connections between CNTs and the CNT-resin interface. Additionally, the tensile and bending performance of the laminated composites showed negligible variation after CNT belt stitching.

Tufting thread and density controls the mode-I fracture toughness in carbon/epoxy composite

Kundan K. Verma et al.

Summary: The study found that tufting can prevent crack propagation and enhance interlaminar fracture toughness, with the highest toughness enhancement observed in carbon thread tufted specimens. Additionally, increasing tuft density can significantly improve the fracture toughness of the composite materials.
