Modelling and analysis of simulated lightning strike tests: A review

S. L. J. Millen et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the increasing use of electrically resistive composites in aircrafts, the importance of analysing lightning strike damage, and the role of simulations in this analysis. It reviews the modeling and simulation approaches in literature, particularly focusing on material properties, construction, loading strategies, meshing methods, and results. Discussions on current and proposed lightning strike modeling approaches, along with their limitations and future challenges, are also presented.

Modelling and understanding edge glow effects on material failure resulting from artificial lightning strike

S. L. J. Millen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of edge glow effects on material failure prediction during artificial lightning strikes. A new modelling approach is proposed, and Finite Element simulations are conducted to compare results against experimental data. The study reveals that changes in inter-ply properties and edge glow effects have significant effects on the predicted damage areas and depth.

An experimental study of impulse-current-induced mechanical effects on laminated carbon fibre-reinforced polymer composites

Yafeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of shock wave pressure induced by impulse currents on CFRP laminates, using a PVDF piezoelectric sensor to directly measure the pressure caused by arc channel expansion. The research showed that shock wave pressure from negative discharge exceeds that from positive discharge, with increases in current amplitude and strike distance resulting in larger pressures. A woven copper mesh protection decreases shock wave pressure, while an additional insulating epoxy resin layer enhances it.

Lightning arc channel effects on surface damage development on a PRSEUS composite panel: An experimental study

Dounia Boushab et al.

Summary: This study investigated lightning damage resistance in composite aircraft structures, particularly focusing on widespread surface damage caused by the expansion of lightning arc-root/channel. Experimental results showed that barriers placed near the lightning attachment point effectively limited intense local damage and widespread surface damage, indicating that the primary cause of the latter is the expansion of the lightning arc-root/channel.

Thermokinetic study of residual solid digestate from anaerobic digestion

Collins I. Akor et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is an effective waste management method in the agri-food sector, but faces challenges such as handling the by-products like solid digestate (SD). The traditional method of using SD as organic fertilizer on land is becoming less viable as the industry grows. New research suggests the potential of using SD as a biofuel source, with kinetic predictions indicating a temperature above 210 degrees C is needed for decomposition.

Lightning mechanical damage prediction in carbon/epoxy laminates using equivalent air blast overpressure

Juhyeong Lee et al.

Summary: A new approach to predict lightning mechanical damage in carbon/epoxy laminates using equivalent air blast overpressure (ABO) is proposed. Three different models were presented, with results showing that ABO models can serve as an alternative to SWO models for predicting mechanical damage.
