Cerium oxide nanoparticles loaded nanofibrous membranes promote bone regeneration for periodontal tissue engineering

Shuangshuang Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) on the behavior and function of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). The results showed that CeO2 NPs had good biocompatibility and promoted cell proliferation. Furthermore, the CeO2 NPs were able to promote osteogenic differentiation of hPDLSCs. The researchers also fabricated fibrous membranes containing CeO2 NPs using electrospinning, which improved mechanical properties and released the nanoparticles. In vivo experiments in rat cranial defect models further demonstrated that the nanofibrous membranes with CeO2 NPs accelerated new bone formation.

Sol-gel-derived 58S bioactive glass containing holmium aiming brachytherapy applications: A dissolution, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity study

Giulia Piagentini Delpino et al.

Summary: Bioactive glasses containing holmium oxide were studied for their dissolution behavior, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity with pre-osteoblastic cells. Results showed that the addition of holmium ions reduced the energy barrier of hydrolysis reactions, promoting early-stage glass dissolution. However, Si-O-Ho bonding strength may lead to more stable long-term dissolution. Overall, these glasses are suitable for brachytherapy applications due to their proper dissolution behavior, high bioactivity, and high cell viability.
