A reactive copper-organophosphate-MXene heterostructure enabled antibacterial, self-extinguishing and mechanically robust polymer nanocomposites

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for antibacterial properties in commercially important polymers, such as Epoxy resins, which face challenges of flammability and poor impact toughness. This study presents a reactive multifunctional heterostructure, CuP-MXene, achieving high antibacterial efficiency, flame retardancy, and improved mechanical properties in EP nanocomposites. The synergistic effects between CuP and MXene provide a general strategy for designing multifunctional nanoadditives and advanced polymers with more industrial applications for EP.

High strength, low flammability, and smoke suppression for epoxy thermoset enabled by a low-loading phosphorus-nitrogen-silicon compound

Wenhui Rao et al.

Summary: The novel phosphorus/nitrogen-containing phenylsiloxane macromolecule (DP-PPD) serves as a multi-functional additive to enhance the mechanical strength, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression performance of EP resin. With a low loading of DP-PPD, significant improvements in impact strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of EP were achieved. Combining aromatic rings, siloxane, and DOPO units, DP-PPD synergistically promotes the formation of a P-Si-containing hybrid char layer for EP resins during combustion, leading to satisfactory flame retardancy and smoke suppression.

Fully Biobased Surface-Functionalized Microcrystalline Cellulose via Green Self-Assembly toward Fire-Retardant, Strong, and Tough Epoxy Biocomposites

Gaobo Lou et al.

Summary: The study presents a simple and green strategy for the fabrication of fully biobased flame retardants by surface-functionalizing microcrystalline cellulose with chitosan and sodium phytate via layer-by-layer assembly in water. The fully biobased flame retardants showed high efficiency and mechanical reinforcement functions when incorporated into epoxy resin composites, enhancing their fire retardancy while simultaneously strengthening and toughening the composite materials. This work provides a promising approach for the development of sustainable and multifunctional biobased flame retardants for polymers.
