Improved mechanical properties in titanium matrix composites reinforced with quasi-continuously networked graphene nanosheets and in-situ formed carbides

Q. Yan et al.

Summary: A quasi-networked reinforcement structure in titanium matrix composites was achieved by uniformly coating Ti-6Al-4V spherical powders with a graphene nanosheet layer, leading to higher tensile strength and good ductility compared to randomly dispersed graphene nanosheets and TiC. The study provided a method to fabricate titanium matrix composites with high strength and good ductility by forming a networked hybrid reinforcement structure.

Microstructure and superior mechanical property of in situ (TiBw plus TiCp)/ Ti composites with laminated structure

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: The strength and ductility of titanium matrix composites (TMCs) often show a trade-off, but this study successfully achieved a balance between strength and ductility through specific processing methods. By using electrophoretic depositing and spark plasma sintering, a laminated titanium composite with high strength and good ductility was created.

Synergetic enhancement of strength and ductility for titanium-based composites reinforced with nickel metallized multi-walled carbon nanotubes

L. L. Dong et al.

Summary: A new methodology is proposed to enhance both ductility and tensile strength of titanium matrix composites by ball milling Ti-6Al-4V powders with Ni decorated multi-walled carbon nanotubes and then sintering the composites powders using spark plasma sintering. The enhanced strength in composites is mainly attributed to the interfacial structures for effectively enhanced load transfer capability between MWCNTs@Ni and Ti matrix. This study provides a new methodology of fabricating metal matrix composites with both high strength and good ductility.

Achieving high performance in graphite nano-flakes reinforced titanium matrix composites through a novel reaction interface design

X. N. Mu et al.

Summary: This research aimed to uncover the detailed characteristics of the nanostructured interface and factors in interfacial carbide affecting interface strength and mechanical properties in graphite nano-flakes (GNFs)/Ti composites. Tensile results indicated that morphologies, bonding strength, orientation, and defects played significant roles in mesoscopic mechanical behavior. The heat-treated GNFs/Ti composite exhibited optimal properties and a synergistic effect between GNFs and TiCx.

Super-high-strength graphene/titanium composites fabricated by selective laser melting

Q. Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene nanosheet (GNS)-reinforced Ti-6Al-4V matrix composite was successfully fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM) process, which exhibited super-high tensile strength and high Young's modulus. The locally reacted GNSs and in-situ formed ultrafine TiC particles were found to be the main contributors to the outstanding mechanical properties of the composite.

Longlong Dong et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method to fabricate titanium matrix composites with significantly enhanced mechanical properties using reduced graphene oxide nanosheets decorated with copper or silver nanopowders. The outstanding mechanical properties of AgprGO/Ti and CuprGO/Ti composites are attributed to the effective load transfer of in-situ formed TiC nanoparticles and the formation of interfacial intermetallic compounds between the rGO nanosheets and Ti matrix.
