Computational continua method and multilevel-multisite mesh refinement method for multiscale analysis of woven composites laminates

Dinghe Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, three-scale computational continua (C-2) method and multilevel-multisite (M-2) mesh refinement method were developed for the multiscale analysis of woven composite laminates. The proposed methods ensure displacement continuity and internal force equilibrium at the interface between different scale computational unit cells (CUCs). Several numerical examples were conducted to validate the new methods by comparing with direct numerical simulations (DNS) models.

Intralayer hybridization of triaxially braided composite lamina using carbon and basalt fibers: Experimental and numerical study

M. Masoumi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tensile properties of hybrid triaxially braided composites of carbon and basalt fibers, finding improved tensile moduli in the longitudinal direction. Attempts to predict the tensile behavior using finite element modeling showed that nonlinear behavior of hybrid composites could not be accurately captured.

Microstructure modeling multiple transverse impact damages of 3-D braided composite based on thermo-mechanical coupling approach

Meiqi Hu et al.

Summary: A microstructure model based on fully thermo-mechanical coupling behavior of 3-D braided composites has been proposed for characterizing multiple transverse impact damage. The model incorporates interfacial contact and cohesive debonding, as well as ductile and shear damage, along with thermo-mechanical coupling constitutive equations. Adiabatic temperature rise and interfacial damage are concentrated on the impact surface with local plastic deformation, caused by the heat energy generated in impact interaction leading to thermal expansion of epoxy resin and extra internal stress. Comparisons between braided preforms with and without axial yarns show that axial yarns improve heat energy absorption and impact damage tolerances, while impeding impact damage growth.
