Flame Transfer Functions and Dynamics of a Closely Confined Premixed Bluff Body Stabilized Flame With Swirl

Hakon T. Nygard et al.

Summary: The flame transfer function (FTF) and flame dynamics of a highly swirled, closely confined, premixed flame were studied over a wide range of equivalence ratios and bulk velocities, showing the importance of flame height to velocity ratio in scaling the FTF. Varying operating conditions resulted in different flame-wall interactions due to changes in flame height. For certain conditions, FTF modulations were observed due to interference of perturbations, but increasing effective confinement led to suppression of modulations. The study also successfully applied a distributed time lag (DTL) model to capture dominant time scales and examine the effect of effective confinement on the FTF response.

The response of an axisymmetric jet placed at various positions in a standing wave

Eirik Aesoy et al.

Summary: The study investigates the hydrodynamic response of an axisymmetric jet placed at various positions in a standing wave oriented normally to the jet. Different modes of fluctuations are excited at velocity and pressure nodes, causing asymmetric forcing and bifurcation of momentum streams between the nodes. The asymmetrical response can be approximated by superposition of boundary conditions at pressure and velocity nodes, with the jet symmetry and momentum spreading proportional to the transverse acoustic velocity magnitude.

Decomposition of swirling flame transfer function in the complex space

Guoqing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, an analytical decomposition of flame transfer function in the complex space is proposed, providing new insights into the relationship between local heat release oscillator and global flame response. The decomposition of a premixed methane-air swirling flame highlights different regions controlled by radial velocity fluctuations induced by vortices. The phase velocities derived from phase distribution agree well with mean velocities measured with particle image velocimetry, and local oscillators in ascending phase allow constructing complex curves representing the FTF effectively.

Acoustic-Convective Interference in Transfer Functions of Methane/Hydrogen and Pure Hydrogen Flames

Eirik Aesoy et al.

Summary: The study investigates the origin of modulations in flame transfer functions in premixed flames, attributing them to flow disturbances from upstream geometry. The disturbances do not affect flame shape or mean velocity, but cause asymmetry in velocity fields. This asymmetry is quantified through hydrodynamic transfer functions and is found to be centered on the shedding frequency of the first convective mode.
