Reflected shock-initiated ignition probed via simultaneous lateral and endwall high-speed imaging with a transparent, cylindrical test-section

Erik Ninnemann et al.

Summary: A TRAnsparent cylindrical (TRAC) shock tube test section was used to investigate the ignition structure behind reflected shockwaves, showing the impact of temperature gradients on mild ignition and providing an experimental correlation for estimating the transition temperature. The effect of diagnostic location in non-homogeneous reactions on ignition delay is quantified, and insights into the ignition process under heavy shock bifurcation are discussed.

A comprehensive experimental and kinetic modeling study of 1-and 2-pentene

Shijun Dong et al.

Summary: The study measured ignition delay times of 1- and 2-pentene using a high-pressure shock tube and a rapid compression machine. The results showed similar fuel reactivities of 1- and 2-pentene at high temperatures, but 1-pentene had higher fuel reactivity and exhibited negative temperature coefficient behavior at low temperatures. Further analysis and modifications were made to the chemical mechanism to improve predictions.

What fuel properties enable higher thermal efficiency in spark-ignited engines?

James P. Szybist et al.

Summary: The Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima) initiative aims to maximize energy efficiency and renewable fuel utilization by developing fuels and engines together. The Central Fuel Property Hypothesis (CFPH) is used to assess the potential benefits of candidate fuels regardless of their chemical composition. A thermodynamic-based assessment quantifies how six individual fuel properties can affect efficiency in spark-ignition (SI) engines, leading to a unified merit function for assessing the fuel property-based efficiency potential of fuels with conventional and unconventional compositions.

Oxidation and pyrolysis of methyl propyl ether

Matthew S. Johnson et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation and construction of a comprehensive chemical kinetic model were conducted to study the ignition, oxidation, and pyrolysis chemistry of methyl propyl ether (MPE). The study revealed strong non-monotonic variations in conversion and product distribution with temperature, as well as significant pressure dependence and heat release during the compression stroke in RCM experiments. The validated mechanism was used to study the chemistry occurring during ignition in a diesel engine under different conditions.
