Multifunctional hydrogels for wound healing: Special focus on biomacromolecular based hydrogels

Nahideh Asadi et al.

Summary: Hydrogels are widely used for wound healing applications due to their similarity to the native extracellular matrix and ability to provide a moist environment. However, lack of multifunctionality and low mechanical properties may limit their ability to support skin tissue regeneration. Incorporating various biomaterials and nanostructures is an emerging approach to develop multifunctional hydrogels for wound healing.

Gelatin/carboxymethyl cellulose based stimuli-responsive hydrogels for controlled delivery of 5-fluorouracil, development, in vitro characterization, in vivo safety and bioavailability evaluation

Samiullah Khan et al.

Summary: The focus of the current work is on the synthesis and characterization of novel pH-sensitive biocompatible gelatin/carboxymethyl cellulose based hydrogels using free radical polymerization technique cross-linked with glutaraldehyde. Various factors affecting the structure and properties of the hydrogels were investigated, and results showed the maximum swelling and highest drug release occurred at pH 1.2, indicating good biocompatibility and controlled release properties of the hydrogels.

Investigation into the physical properties, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of Bletilla striata polysaccharide/chitosan membranes

Yuan Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop new biodegradable, antioxidant, and antimicrobial membranes based on two natural polysaccharides, BSP and CS, in response to the disadvantages of traditional wound dressings. Through various analyses, it was found that the introduction of BSP significantly improved the physical properties of the films, and the biological activity of the developed films was validated through antioxidant and antibacterial assays, indicating that BSP/CS films can be suitable materials for wound dressing development.
